Mold in Your Home — What to Do
I am not a mold professional — this is what my mold consultant advised for me personally. If you've found mold, here's how to contain it safely while you get professional help.

Cover and contain
The first thing you do when you find mold is NOT try to clean it. You contain it. Disturbing mold without containment sends spores airborne throughout your house — including through your HVAC system. Cover it, seal it, and protect yourself.
Wear protection
Put on a mask before you do anything else — you don't want to breathe spores while you work
Cover with plastic sheeting
Use 6ml plastic sheeting secured with duct tape over the affected area. If the bathroom has no door, install sheeting with a zipper as a barrier.
Seal air returns
Cover HVAC air returns with plastic to prevent spores from entering the duct system and spreading through your whole house
Remove fabrics
Take all bathmats and towels out of the space — moisture-holding fabrics harbor and spread mold
Fog with HOCL
Hypochlorous acid (HOCL) kills airborne and surface mold. It's what your white blood cells already produce to fight pathogens. Dispersing it as fog through a humidifier is more effective than spray-wiping alone because it reaches airborne spores too.
Fog with HOCL
Disperse Curaclean HOCL solution through a humidifier for 30 minutes to reach airborne mold in the contained space.
Wipe all surfaces
After fogging, wipe every surface with a microfiber cloth to remove dead spores and residue
Deep clean fixtures
Clean toilet tanks and bowls with full-strength Curaclean — mold loves the moisture inside toilet tanks
Ventilate and filter
After fogging and wiping, you need to clear the air. Open windows for cross-ventilation and run air filtration systems continuously. A quality air scrubber can remove 99.8% of mold in just 2 hours.
Maintain and prevent
Containment is not remediation. Keep the space sealed and filtered while you schedule professional remediation. In the meantime, replace conditions that allowed mold to grow in the first place.
Keep filters running
Air filtration runs continuously until professional remediation is complete
Run exhaust fans
Always run bathroom exhaust fans during and after showers. Use dehumidifiers to control moisture levels.
Replace affected materials
Drywall and floorboards must be replaced — surface cleaning alone is not enough for porous materials
Swap bathmats
Replace fabric bathmats with diatomaceous earth bathmats and stop storing towels in the bathroom
Post-exposure immune support
If you've been exposed to mold — especially if you have Lyme, autoimmune conditions, or mast cell activation — your immune system needs extra support while you're dealing with the exposure.
Support mast cells after exposure
Use before bed to support mast-cell function and immune response during active mold exposure.
